I’m sending this Important Update outside our regular two-week V2G News cadence. This announcement by Tesla reflects a different kind of market signal: the largest EV manufacturer in the U.S. integrating bidirectional charging and grid participation directly into a production vehicle, its software platform, and a retail energy offering.

V2G Finds—US
Tesla has launched its first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) program for the Cybertruck in Texas, signaling an important step beyond vehicle-to-home backup and into active grid services. Announced by Tesla Energy, the new Powershare Grid Support initiative allows eligible Cybertruck owners to export electricity to the grid during high-demand events in exchange for bill credits. The invitation-only rollout is limited to select service territories and builds directly on the Cybertruck’s existing Powershare hardware, which already enables up to 11.5 kW of bidirectional power for home backup.
In its initial phase, the program is available to customers served by CenterPoint Energy and Oncor, with participation managed entirely through the Tesla app and Tesla Electric Drive plan. While modest in scale, the launch is notable for what it represents: the nation’s leading EV manufacturer integrating V2G directly into its vehicles, software platform, and retail energy offering.
Tesla has indicated that California is next, with future eligibility tied to utilities such as Pacific Gas and Electric Company, Southern California Edison, and San Diego Gas & Electric. If expanded successfully, the program could accelerate the normalization of EVs as dispatchable grid assets, especially in markets facing growing peak demand and reliability challenges.
